On May 25, 2024, Milpitas High School hosted MilpitasHacks, an exhilarating hackathon organized by the students of Milpitas High School. This event was open exclusively to high schoolers and saw over 200 signups, with enthusiastic participants gathering for a day of innovation and collaboration. With four distinct tracks—Code for Cause, Fintech, Entertainment, and Education—the hackathon provided a platform for young minds to showcase their creativity and technical prowess.
For the Code for Cause Track, we partnered with WeCommunity, a nonprofit known for organizing resource drives and raising thousands of dollars in items to support various causes. The project for this track aimed to develop a responsive web application for WeCommunity, enabling users to easily organize and manage their own resource drives. Participants were tasked with creating a user-friendly, intuitive app with a focus on seamless navigation and an engaging UI/UX. Key features included a home screen displaying nearby resource drives, a create page for publishing new drives, and an analytics section for viewing and interacting with statistics about the drives.
The participants at MilpitasHacks rose to the challenge, presenting a variety of innovative projects. The winning team—comprising Arjun Ramesh, Sasidhar J, Varshith Gude, and Aaditya Senji—developed a project titled ResourceFlow, which stood out for its robust functionality and user-centric design. Their project included all the required features and demonstrated exceptional creativity and technical skill.
The judges for the Code for Cause Track included WeCommunity's founders and Code for Cause's own Mithil Patil and Atharv Deshmukh, who have collectively attended over 15 hackathons. They were thoroughly impressed by the talent and dedication of all the participants. The winning team, in collaboration with WeCommunity, quickly refined and completed the app, which is now actively used by WeCommunity to organize future resource drives.
The event also garnered significant attention from the community, with the Milpitas Unified School District Superintendent attending and showing support for the young innovators. MilpitasHacks was a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential of young minds to drive social good through technology. As we continue to expand our partnership model, we look forward to empowering more students and nonprofits, creating lasting impacts in our communities.
